The half of CTET Maths that most aspirants ignore

The Mathematics section carries 30 marks, and roughly half of those questions are not about mathematics at all — they are about the pedagogy of mathematics. How do children build number sense? What does a particular error reveal about a child's thinking? Which teaching approach suits a mixed-ability class? Aspirants who prepare only the content half routinely score around 16 out of 30 and cannot understand why. The content questions themselves stay at Class 1–8 NCERT level, so depth is rarely the problem; the pedagogy gap is.

What this quiz covers

Following the official CTET syllabus, the banks cover number system and place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentage, profit and loss, simple interest, mensuration, geometry and shapes, data handling, patterns, algebra basics for Paper 2, and the full pedagogical strand: the nature of mathematics, place of mathematics in the curriculum, language of mathematics, community mathematics, evaluation, remedial teaching, and the analysis of children's errors.

Every answer carries a worked explanation, so a wrong attempt teaches you the method rather than simply recording a loss. Questions are grouped into three levels of rising difficulty, and each bank opens only after the previous one is cleared, which keeps practice honest and prevents skipping ahead of your actual readiness.

Speed, accuracy and the no-negative-marking rule

CTET has no negative marking, so a blank answer and a wrong answer cost you exactly the same. Train yourself to eliminate two options and then commit — never leave a question unattempted. Aim to finish a straightforward content question in under 45 seconds, which buys you thinking time on pedagogy questions, where the options are deliberately close together and careless reading is the main cause of lost marks.

Error analysis deserves special attention. When a child writes 27 + 15 = 312, that is not carelessness; it is a place-value misconception, and CTET expects you to identify it as such.
